Charlevoix has been called the home of the Million Dollar Sunset. A little village located on the shores of Lake Michigan known for its natural beauty and spectacular sunsets. On a pier jutting out into the lake to the west is the Charlevoix Lighthouse. This light is there to direct yacht owners in the dark of night into the channel that will lead them to a safe haven in Round Lake. Lighthouses for centuries have guided men to safety and rest. Without the Light men have lost their direction and have gone astray. Sometimes to the detriment of losing their ship and lives upon the rocks.

In 1987, my family and I came to a dark Charlevoix with the hopes and the dreams of building a great lighthouse. The groundwork had already been laid by a great man of God, Jim Lugibihl. We desired to build a lighthouse that would shine the beacon of hope to a lost and dying world - a lighthouse that would guide men through the reefs and rocks of life’s stormy sea to a safe haven in Christ. Charlevoix had a physical lighthouse. Our prayer was that a spiritual lighthouse would grow up to point, direct and guide wayward souls to the Creator. Bible Baptist Church of Charlevoix is this lighthouse.

Now we are in our twentieth year of ministry. Over the years God has taken us from a tiny, white building on May Street to an immaculate facility on Highway M-66. We praise him for this, but more importantly than having nice buildings and spacious grounds, thousands of people have been impacted. The family at Bible Baptist Church is growing closer and stronger. Every week scores of children ride our buses to Sunday School. Every week adults learn from God’s Word in classes developed just for them. Teenagers are learning character traits that will help and enable them to serve God.

BBC’s Lighthouse is more than an icon. It is more than a symbol. It is life. It is real. It is a family. It brings direction, hope, a future. It enables broken families to mend, broken hearts to heal and broken individuals to start over again. Bible Baptist Church is a place to call home. Inside of our doors, you will find a closer family than you could ever wish for. I know every church says that, but I guess you just have to see it in order to believe it.
